Cancer – eating this 25p vegetable everyday could lower your risk of the disease

Cancer will develop in more than 33 per cent of people during their lifetime, according to the NHS.

There are more than 200 different types of cancer, and each one has different signs and symptoms.

Changes to the body’s normal function could be an early sign of the disease.

But, you could lower your risk of cancer by eating more garlic, studies have claimed.

Garlic has antibacterial properties, and could block the formation of cancer-causing substances, scientists have claimed.

It could also stop cancerous substances from being made in the body and improve DNA repair, it’s been reported.

“Garlic is a great choice when it comes to giving your body a little extra protection,” said medical website Healthline.

“To reap the benefits of garlic, you should eat one clove a day, or 300 to 1,000mg of garlic extract.”

But, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) said it doesn’t recommend dietary supplements for cancer prevention on its own.

Garlic is one of several vegetables that could have anticancer properties, it said.

“Because all garlic preparations are not the same, it is difficult to determine the exact amount of garlic that may be needed to reduce cancer risk.

“Furthermore, the active compounds present in garlic may lose their effectiveness with time, handling, and processing.”

The World Health Organisation recommends eating about one garlic clove everyday for general health promotion.

You could also lower your risk of developing cancer by eating a healthy diet, and by doing regular exercise, the NHS said.

See a GP if you become aware of any unexplained changes to your body.

That could include sudden lumps, finding blood in your urine, or changes to your usual bowel habit.
